It is not difficult to own a website which is positioned in MSN, Yahoo and Google etc, but the main effort lies in calculating where to begin from. Here are some tips which will help you to be positioned at the top in Search Engines:

Don’t purchase a new web domain unless you have to: It is very important for the search engines to understand for how long your website or domain name has been into existence. While purchasing a new domain and redirecting your old website to the new one, the best rated option would be to make use of your former domain as far as possible. But, in case if you have to select a new domain and start from the scratch, there is every possibility that there would be a major loss in the web traffic. And this loss can last for anywhere between few weeks to months or may be even more.

Optimize your site for your target audience and not for the search engines: This may sound quite counterintuitive but it is quite imperative. Whenever any search is put in the search engines, they look for the web pages that best fit or match the keywords. If the keyword matches or relates to the content or service offered by your website, then the people typing the keywords will become a part of your targeted audience. It is very important to optimize your website as per the needs of your targeted audiences. If you are not sure about your target audience, then probably you will need to find out some method of doing that. There are quite a lot of online studies that will help you in providing the demographic information and at the same time visit other forums, sites and locations where your targeted audience might be. This information would be quite crucial to your copywriting, keyword research and website design.

Research your keyword phrases extensively: Sometimes the phrases that might be perceived by you as the ones used by your targeted audiences, might be wrong. To search for the most optimal phrases, you can make use of the research tools such as Keywordiscovery, Google’s Keyword Tool or Wordtracker. Make a complete list of the most relevant keywords or phrases or your website and also include a few other for every page. Avoid the use of generic keywords, as they would hardly indicate about the details of your web site.

Your site should be programmed in such a way that they are crawler friendly:  The search engines cannot fill in the forms, locate your website, cannot go about reading the java script menus and links and cannot even interpret flashes and graphics. All of this doesn’t end up to say that you are not allowed to use it, but you can use it, if needed. However your site should contain certain means by which it can be located easily. If your site just consists of drop down menu, then it will be difficult for your audience to find those web pages. You should make sure that your site is composed of HTML – links, which makes the work of the search engine crawlers easier.

Design and categorized your site navigation and architecture based on the keyword research: The site should be constructed in such a way that it covers all the details and about your services and products. For example: the site is all about selling toys. In many ways the site can be categorized. Like you can divide the types of toys according to the children age or may be divided according to the toys brand. It is your responsibility to ensure that the navigation of your site primarily showcases the various methods of searching.
Include your targeted Keywords in the domain name: It is always better to include all the targeted keywords in the domain name of your website. Once the website has the targeted keywords in its domain name, the search engine will consider that the site contains all the necessary information about the product and will surely rank it higher. No doubt that a good domain name will surely look good and sound good but it can hardly help in making your ranking better.
